SouthportCC
member Margaret Sims held a coffee morning on Friday 26th September at the cycling clubroom in Victoria Park from 10:30 to 12:30 to raise funds for the Macmillan Charity. Margaret and her assistants
would like to thank everyone who attended and made a generous contribution to the worthy cause. Over £360
was raise; all proceeds go to the Macmillan Nurses Charity. A special thank
you must go to Brian Wharton for his supply of home made scones, with home made raspberry jam from his allotment. (jam butty mine ?) The Tour of Britain
passed through Southport on 14th Sept. The peleton rode down Lord Street on the way from the stage start in Blackpool to the finish in Liverpool. Club member Brian Bladon persuaded the Tour organizers to hold a sprint outside the Town Hall
There are some photos of the riders on the Tour_of_Britain page. Sefton Council arranged some cycling and health awareness related promotions outside the Town Hall, with an oppertunity to ride on a computer
simulator, see photos on Sefton Cycling;
freebies were dished out and assorted side shows promoted exercise.. Some photos of members of SouthportCC
demonstrating how to use the equipment are on the SCC_pix page. The turnout for the event was massive and the weather was ideal. Colin Baldwin, who co-ordinated the support by
SouthportCC
members, would like say "Ta very much for your efforts, everyone thought the day was a huge success and to get the decent weather was a bonus.
My thanks to everyone who turned up and helped out in one way or another." Well done to all involved. The Bill Bradley Memorial rides held in July
around the Forest of Bowland and the Lancashire Fylde raise £1200 for the Macmillan Nurses Charity. Waitrose Formby
supported the event, and provided energy drinks, water, biscuits etc, that were appreciated by all the rides on one of the hottest Sunday's of the year.
There is a report of the Etape de Tour 2008 completed by SouthportCC riders Peter and Malcolm. The story is particularly interesting as the pair organized their own transports, digs, entry forms etc.
To read the story hit this link Etape 2008The first of the 2009 SouthportCC

SouthportCC

SouthportCC
is planning a series of events to take place in the spring and summer in and around Victoria Park. The events will cost quite a bit to put on and we have asked for a grant from the Merseyside Community Foundation Grass Roots Award Scheme.
We have been notified that our bid was successful and we have been awarded £5000 over the next 3 years; volunteers will be required. Details will emerge as the final arrangements are made. For the Go Ride Project
we need to get ourselves organised so we meet all the conditions and criteria of the award. A meeting will be held at the club house on Tuesday 17 Feb at 7:30 PM to discuss the way forward.
All who are willing to contribute are invited to attend. There is an obituary of Bob Bird
on a page on this site, written by Paul Mayor
Craig has added more material to YouTube relating to club activities, use this link www.youtube.com/southportcc Here is a link to a website run by ex SouthportCC rider Ray Green, this article refers to some of his accomplaces who are still active local cyclists.
Ramon has retired to the South Coast
http://greenjersey.wordpress.com/tag/cycling/the-worlds/ Also on Ray's site are some of his unbiased opinions of all things cycling, here is an example : "I'll keep this short or my blood pressure will go through the roof. What about Duffield's commentary at the Dauphine Libere? He must be having a laugh at
the viewing publics' expense. Lets be clear about this, he is absolutely bloody useless. He talks drivel in an endless stream of cliches. You could go in any cyclists' cafe in the country and say "anybody fancy doing a
bit of commentary on the tele ?" and find a bunch of people who would do a better job than that clown. In the old days I put up with his crap as he would occasionally identify a rider I didn't recognise but now he seems
only to know "Vineykrov" so I use the mute button".
Pete Leonard raised over £2000 on his LEJOG ride in May
this year; and would like to thanks everyone for their help. An account of the ride is on the LEJOG_2007 page.
Pete's diary from his LEJOG ride in 1998 is on this site on it's own page. I won't spoil the story by telling you
what happened in the end, but it is well worth reading all the way through ! The results for the SouthportCC OPEN 25 mile Time Trial incorporating the Neil Smith & Norman Rimmer Memorial Trophies is on the Open 25 July page. SouthportCC riders Nev Holgate and Terry Seanor
rode a 600km, 373 mile, Audax from Preston to Edinburgh and back. Setting off on Sunday 13th July they completed the journey in 38 hours. As both rides are 70+ this achievement is even more remarkable. Terry and Nev are half way to their target of completing a Round-the-year-Randoneur, by having ridden at least a 200km event in each month this year; incuding some 300km and 400km rides.
For several years SouthportCC
has been campaigning to have the old railway bridge over the River Douglas at Hesketh Bank reinstated as a foot and cycle crossing; the road bridge on the A59 at Bank Hall is narrow and on a bend. At a cycle group meeting at LCC in Preston on Thursday night, attended by Ken, Lancashire County Council announced a competition is to be held to design a new bridge over the River Douglas at the site of the old Hesketh Bank station. The bridge is to be a bridle way and cycle route. A company called Remade (part of LCC) are the promoters and the North West Regional Development Agency are also involved. More information about the project can be found on
www.riverdouglas.co.uk/ There are some images of the old bridge on www.heskethbank.com/history/photos/railway.htmlThere is some information about the Tour of Britain support races on this site. see the Tour of Britain page. Waitrose Formby have generously offered to support the
SouthportCC
Bill Bradley Ride on the 27thJuly. The event is in support of the Macmillan Nurses Appeal, and has a choice
of 3 route, to suit differing abilities. All the rides are through the quiter lanes of Lancashire's Forest of Bowland. Thanks to Waitrose Formby
we will have some goodies for the riders. For information on the ride see the 2008 BBradley rides
page on this site. Ken and Nev
were at RAF Woodvale on Friday night helping a fund raising effort by the ATC at Woodvale. They were taking riders from St Dunstans, the blind charity, round the airfield on
the back of Nev's tandem. Well done to the pair of them for supporting this worthwhile cause |
