SouthportCC young member Tom Stewart seen here on Lord Street in June, had a good racing season this summer having won 25 under 10s schoolboy races this year

 

 

Hard riders Pete Gawthorne, Malcolm Heathcote and Allan Taylor are off on a 600km ride on August 12th, the first leg is north to Penrith then home before the second circuit to Newport, Shropshire and back. Last week Allan rode to York via Park Rash !

The Sunday Club runs for schoolpersons which start at the clubroom, in future are now going to be split into two groups.
We have had as many as 23 starters and we are finding it hard to control the group safely
Any younger rider who is unable to ride 50 miles should continue with the rides from the clubroom in Victoria Park at 09-30 prompt.
Jim Gunn has agreed to take control of these runs.
Riders who can ride about 50 miles should be at the bus stop near the Plough Hotel for a social run by 09-30. This run will leave promptly 9:30 on the dot. The Ormskirk riders can pick up the ride at Tarleton Lights at 10-00.

The Bill Bradley ride held on 25th July was again a success with 167 riders. We are waiting for a report from Mr & Mrs to give numbers of riders on the 80 miler and 40 miler etc.
One of the riders, young Pavel did some off-roading on the decent from Boundary Hill. Fortunately there were several club members about to call for assistance including Ken. The added interest of Pav taking a dive going down Boundary Hill  and the arrival of the Air Ambulance the NHS Ambulance and the Mountian rescue gave many riders an excuse for a breather; after all that with no broken bones  he was home before  Ken

SouthportCC won a prestigous award this summer being named as the "Club of the Year" by Sefton Council. 13 members of SouthportCC attended the Sefton Sports Awards gala night at the Floral Hall on the 30th June. The capacity crowd of 450 enjoyed the food and dancing The main event of the evening was the presentation of the Sefton  Sports Awards for 2010.
The club had been short listed in the Club of the Year section in recognition of the efforts to encourage youngsters to enjoy cycling and  took the honours in this section

 


Southportcc's young rider Tom Stewart won his 8th race of the season on 10th June in the under 10s race at Preston arena, his brother Sam was 4th.

A celebration of Derek 'Broo' Rimmer's 80th birthday was held at the club hut on 31st May. Broo, on the left, was in fine fettle and is with his old sparing partners Roy Freeman and Harold Woodcock.

The SouthportCC 10 mile time trial on 29th April was cancelled due to a road blockage caused by a Road Traffic Accident in Carr House Lane prior to starting the event. No cyclists involved.

The SouthportCC series of Evening Time Trials for 2010 start on Thursday 15th April and will be held each Thursday until the end of August. Each event is 10 miles except on the last Thursday of May, June and July which will be 25 milers. The first rider will be off at 7:01pm. As usual for all SouthportCC events the weather is guarenteed

2010 Bill Bradley Memorial Ride to be held in July are on the Bill BradleyRide page. The ride will start at the Preston Sports Arena, there will a choice of three rides around the Forest of Bowland using country lanes

Results of the Dolan Cycles Saturday races held in Victoria Park are on this site for week one and week two. The week three and overall results and photographs are now posted to this site. There are some photos on the Dolan pix page.
Local cycling enthusiast Cllr.
Fred Weavers, who had watched the racing, presented the prizes to the school girls and boys, results were based on the three days of racing. Nearly 100 youngsters took part in the event. First prize in each age group was a Dolan Cycles frameset.

THANK YOU to everyone who supported and assisted in the events, marshalls, tea ladies, official, time keepers and the results staff and all who made a big effort to ensure the wheels kept turning.

 

At the AGM held on 14th Dec Paul Mayor was elected asthe club chairman.
The next youth racing and fun night is on Friday 18th Dec at the club.

On  Monday 26th Oct in the clubroom, Southport Cycling Club members presented a cheque for £1400 to the Macmillan Cancer Appeal. This is the proceeds of the Bill Bradley Memorial ride held in July. Dave Hilton set a new club 10 record last Saturday in the Kent Valley event on the Levens, L1015 course with a time of 20.11

Dave Hilton won the SouthportCC 2009 Thursday Night 10 mile time trial series by 1 point from last years winner Rob Hurst. Well done to everyone who took part in the events, especially those who had the bottle to ride for the first time, then come back later to have another go ! The series will resume in April 2010

SouthportCC rider Annette Robinson completed the coast-to-coast ride over the August Bank holiday weekend, her solo ride on a scenic route took three days. In July Annette rode form Lands End to John o'Groats with Diane Davis. Diane has since move to Qatar and taken her bike with her. see LEJOG_blog for their story.

The Saturday morning rides, leaving the bus stop by the Plough Hotel at 9:30 prompt, are attracting more new riders each week. The rides around the lanes of West Lancashire are ideal for anyone new to cycling in a group, usually returning to Southport at midday with an optional cafe stop.

Cllr Fred Weavers , Lib Dem, locally elected representative and on the Sefton Cycling Forum; will attend the club to discuss local cycling issues. If you have any questions, such as 'How much is left of the £5million awarded to Southport as a cycling town'; and 'What do we have to show for the money spent to date'; this will be an opportunity to ask questions

At the SouthportCC AGM held on 15th Dec. Mr Derek Rimmer (broo) was elected as the club President.
