Henry Hunter 1st and 3rd in Salt Ayre.

After entering in to cycling for the first time this year Henry Hunter of Southport Cycling Club has achieved what many would wish to do in their second or third season. After a season, including crashes, of travelling the length and breadth of the North West Henry has shown true grit and determination to progress within the sport. Finishing third overall in the North Wests CDNW youth league in some ways demonstrates his natural ability though does not portray the form that has been shown at the end of the season.

In the seasons final event, Henry showed tactical knowledge and determination to win the first event of the day in wet and greasy conditions at the Salt Ayre circuit. A hard fought third place in the second event gave him his superb overall finish and a Natinal Ranking of 128.

Team Southport Race at Great Budworth 1st May

Sadly with John Findley racing for another club Team Southport was now down to 4 riders. Martin Phillips, Steve Duffel, Simon Deeley and Spencer Coltman made their way to the leafy Cheshire lanes of Higher Wincham.

Now this course is notorious for big potholes and we all remembered Martin who last year nearly bit his tongue off when his front wheel disappeared down a big hole. So with this in mind we left our best wheels at home. 56 riders left the start line on a course that was fairly flat with one little kick up half way round but with a head wind on the other side it was going to be hard to stay away in a break. After a couple of steady laps all hell broke loose as the attacks started and a small group of 7 riders managed to get away up the road forcing riders out the back door one of which was our Martin! Anyway with the peleton working on the front to bring back the break away everyone decided to let the break go and the pace calmed down. With 3 laps to go a couple of other riders decided to try their luck by attacking off the front and bridged the gap to the front group and after another burst of speed to bring them back we gave up and let them go. On the last lap everyone was getting ready for the final sprint for the minor places. It was a fast flat run in with riders strongly defending their positions, then with everyone in their biggest gear we all hammered it to the finish line.

9 riders managed to stay away in the end finishing 1m 16 sec over the peleton. 3 Southport riders finished the race Steve 29th, Simon 23rd, Spencer 17th.

Thanks to Spencer Coltman for the report. Posted 05/05/2011

Race report -Easter Sunday 24th April

Easter Sunday saw the Frank Morgan Memorial road race take place at Kirkby.
Open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th cat riders, normally a very fast race on wide roads around Kirkby Industrial estate.
Southport CC had four riders competing, Spencer Coltman, Simon Deeley, Steve Duffel and Martin Phillips.
On a beautiful morning the race set off at its usual fast pace, lots of attempts being made to establish a breakaway.
Eventually a 3 man break went away, and although towards the last 5 miles it looked like we might catch them ,
they indeed managed to stay away, leaving us riders left in the bunch preparing for the sprint.
With half a lap to go M0artin hatched a plan, trying to use his head ,because his legs dont work like they used to.
He decided to try and locate Phil Thomas's rear wheel in readyness for the 70 up sprint, but watched in vain as Phil
moved up the field on the opposite side of the bunch. Plan B to sprint in with everyone else seemed the sensible option.
All 4 SCC riders finished safely in the bunch, Spencer being our best finisher.

Thanks to Martin Phillips for the report. Posted 01/05/2011

CDNW Youth League Round 1 - Victoria Park 12 March

It was a good day today with a record 140 starters!! We had some great racing on and everyone dealt with the conditions well. I'd like to say a big thank you to our race officials, and the guys that marshalled when asked for extras. A big thanks to Southport CC who set the course out, booked the park and first aid, did the catering as well as providing two officials and opening there club room up for toilets!!
