rode a 600km, 373 mile, Audax from Preston to Edinburgh and back. Setting off on Sunday 13th July they completed the journey in 38 hours. For several years SouthportCC
has been campaigning to have the old railway bridge over the River Douglas at Hesketh Bank reinstated as a foot and cycle crossing; the road bridge on the A59 at Bank Hall is narrow and on a bend. At a cycle group meeting at LCC in Preston on Thursday night, attended by Ken, Lancashire County Council announced a competition is to be held to design a new bridge over the River Douglas at the site of the old Hesketh Bank station. The bridge is to be a bridle way and cycle route. A company called Remade (part of LCC) are the promoters and the North West Regional Development Agency are also involved. sent a cohort of riders to the Combined Clubs 10 mile Time Trial, organized by Lancky Road club on 8th March. Every club in the area is invited to enter a team in this early season competion. SouthportCC had a
good turn out ready for the ride from Garstang, north on the A6 to Hampson Green roundabout then back to Garstang. As our first rider, Derek, set off the rain began, the wind picked up and by the time our last rider,
John F, took to the road there were howling winds, hailstone and poor visibility. With all rider well frozen and soaked by the finish it was not surprising the several riders had clocked their worst ever times.

memorable trip, Delta airline lost his baggage on his way here, which he only recovered when he arrived back at Manchester airport on Tuesday on his way home. Bob borrowed some gear from his brother who picked him up at
Manchester Airport, lucky he is about the same size. (even luckier it wasn't his sister who picked him up !) Going back he was on time to Atlanta but Delta cancelled his ongoing flight to Jacksonville and he had to stay
the night in Atlanta some weekend !
SouthportCC rider Jim Henderson
finish 4th in the National Hill Climb held on 28th Oct. Although 4th in this super tough National event is a great achievment, the course was not the very steep profile that suits true hill climbers like Jim.. A potted History of SouthportCC written by an esteemed member of the Pickwick Club is on this site on the page History of SCCThere are some photographs on the site courtesy
of John Shadlock, they are on the page titled Olde Photes. Some are from New Brighton when Tom Simpson rode, Phil Liggett was the organiser for the New Brighton CC, before he was famous. Can you recognise

A note from Richard regarding the completion of this years
club time trial programme: Hi Everyone, That's it for another year (my 11th!) The night wasn't as good as I promised but still some good times. At least the wind was behind the
riders on some sections of the course. I'll let you know when I've finalised the dates for next year. Thanks everybody for competing, I've got to know your riding styles so well I don't need to look at your numbers
as you pass me at the finish. Thanks also to all the marshals as I can't do it without you.
Hope to see you all next year, Best Regards, Richard Abram.
I have added a page with a couple of reports that have appeared recently in the local paper, The Southport Visiter
(Viz), for people who live out of town. If you would like this to continue let us know.
SouthportCC rider Dave Abram completed a charity ride with some of his work
colleagues at Paymentshield
from their Edinburgh
office to the Southport office.
Raising £10,000 for Cancer Research UK along the way Dave, our hero, is in the top rightHere is a link to a website run by ex SouthportCC rider Ray Green, this article
refers to some of his accomplaces who are still active local cyclists. Ramon has retired to the South Coast
http://greenjersey.wordpress.com/tag/cycling/the-worlds/
Also on Ray's site are some of his unbiased opinions of all things cycling, here is an example :
"I'll keep this short or my blood pressure will go through the roof. What about Duffield's commentary at the Dauphine Libere? He must be having a laugh at
the viewing publics' expense. Lets be clear about this, he is absolutely bloody useless. He talks drivel in an endless stream of cliches. You could go in any
cyclists' cafe in the country and say "anybody fancy doing a bit of commentary on the tele ?" and find a bunch of people who would do a better job than that
clown. In the old days I put up with his crap as he would occasionally identify a rider I didn't recognise but now he seems only to know "Vineykrov" so I use the mute button". SouthportCC rider Damon Peacock completed 361.4 miles in the National 24 Hour, organised by Mersey Roads Club over the very wet weekend of 21st/22nd July 2007. One hour to go
Damon rode the Southport 25TT on the following Thursay, and is riding the Paris-Brest-Paris 1200km Audax event in August. Damon Peacock has made a short film of the National 25 held on Bickerstaffe.

Pete Leonard raised over £2000 on his LEJOG ride in May this year; and would like to thanks everyone for their help. An account of the ride is on the LEJOG_2007 page. Pete's diary
from his LEJOG ride in 1998 is on this site on it's own page. I won't spoil the story by telling you what happened in the end, but it is well worth reading all the way through ! The Boxing Day 10k result:
Another hard fought Boxing Day race with a total of 2 competitors braving the sub-arctic conditions. One competitor was totally focussed on the race, the
other succumbing only after veiled threats from the secretary and chairman. 1. Dave Hilton 13:53 2. Rob Rix 15:36 |
