Flying a frosty winter flag in minus 2 degrees at the beginning of December (just before the heavy snow) were Sue and Richard Cary. The event is run, bike, run (3miles, 10 miles, 3 miles). Next one this coming weekend (9th January), and the last in the series in February. The cake van at the finish is a popular feature to this well-organised event. I think Sue looks like she's enjoying herself too much. (Richard Cary)

Notes from the AGM can be found at Club Details-Officials or click here
On Friday 10th December five club members (Howard Massam, Colin Baldwin, Joe Croughan, Malcom Heathcote and Peter Gawthorne) attended a Bike Maintenance course at Litherland Sports Park run by Brian Nener, Sefton’s Cycling Officer.
The purpose was to enable members to help with sorting bike problems for the youth section rides and Go Ride sessions undertaken in local schools. During the day Brian took participants through basic pre-ride check routines before moving on to activities including replacement of gear/brake cabling and wheel truing.
Report from Peter who was a spectator on the day nursing his broken collar bone but wielding the camera.
List has been added at Club Details-Officials- History. More
A list of the proposals with a copy of the graph is here (opens in new window and can be saved to print out)
The AGM will be held at the club on Monday 13 December, starting at 7:00 PM prompt. The agenda for the meeting can be downloaded here. Accounts are available to Club Members.
With several propositions to discuss the meeting will be busy, so it would be appreciated if questions relating to the Accounts could be flagged to the Treasurer in advance. This will allow any necessary explanations to be dealt with quickly.

There is an opportunity for young riders and their parents (and any interested members) to attend a presentation at 8.00.pm on 14 December at Litherland Sports Park. Lasting one and a half hours the presentation, which is video based and entitled "WHY TRACK", covers track development and the part it plays in cycling. A knock on from this will be the North West Regions track sessions for young novice to intermediate riders which Barry Warriner will will be arranging early in the New Year at Manchester velodrome. Colin Baldwin represented SCC at the Merseyside Sporting Champions dinner at the AdelphiHotel on 12th November. SCC had been nominated for the Merseyside Sports Club of the Year. The only victory however came in the Raffle where Colin secured a cricket bat signed by the Lancashire Team!
is back on his feet but not on his bike yet, he has pins in his thumb, his right hand in plaster and a few aches and pains.
The SouthportCC Hilly Time Trial was won by John Findlay with Andy Grice second and Spencer Coltman third. After a cafe stop at Chipping the group set off to Bleasedale for the Downhill competition, won by Lenny Collins. Unfortunately on the way to Bleasdale Spence came off his bike in an incident involving a car. Spencer was air lifted to Preston hospital have lost a lot of blood from head injuries.

Friends of Peter Wood will be pleased to know that he is comfortable and doing well having moved to a Residential Home in Morecombe. His room is located at the front with views of Morecombe Bay and the Lake District National park. SCC members Broo Rimmer, Ken Perkins and Bill Harrison spent a day in July with Peter, we enjoyed a walk and later a meal at a sea front restaurant. As you can see from one of the photographs Peter still attracts the ladies. Broo makes regular visits to see Peter and the Boys are planning another trip soon. Click the photos to enlarge.

Tuesday 16th August saw Allan Taylor and Neil (from Scotland) set off from the Plough in the rain. A change to the normal route saw them heading on Shore Road at a good pace. A moment of inattention, a tangle of handlebars and Allan hit the deck!!! A call to "International Rescue" (his wife Sheena) had him rescued and off to A & E in 20 minutes. Triage and a couple of x-rays revealed 4 posterior broken ribs and broken right collar bone. A night in hospital followed. Now back at home anticipating 6 weeks off the bike. It only hurts when you laugh!!!
"I would just like to express mine and my family`s great appreciation for both the fantastic turn out at my fathers funeral and all the kind words ,letters & gestures in rememberance of my father. It really meant a lot to us all .I know that some of you couldn`t make it to the funeral but I know that your thoughts were with us on the day. " Gary Mosscrop.

On Saturday 2 July Sue and I (Richard Cary)completed
this unique variation on a triathlon. One person has to complete the 1000m swim (fortunately for me, this was Sue), then hop on the tandem for a hilly 21mile circuit around Shropshire. It includes a two ascents of a nasty 1-mile 10% clmb. At the end of the second climb (seen here in its closing off-road 20% bit) the other partner (me, in this case) dismounts to complete a brutal 10k fell run (over the top of Bury Ditches) before getting back on the tandem for a final 4-mile dash back to event HQ. For the third consecutive year Sue and I finished 11th overall and second Mixed Vets team. (Click to enlarge the picture)
A series of thefts have hit members
Rachel Fripp rachel.fripp@googlemail.comWe had our shed broken into overnight-George is devastated as is Howard, as all 3 of our racing bikes have been stolen
From Neil Thomson - I thought that some club members might find this series of events interesting. I have taken part in this Lanequest Series for the last 3 years and found them great fun. They are all in South Lakeland on Tuesday evenings in June and July. The events are basicly Orienteering on bikes along quiet lanes in South Cumbria, and many club riders take part. For anyone who enjoys mapreading and cycling it is a good night out. The downside is that most of them are about an hour and a half away. Regards Neill Thompson -- SSC Member. Click here for Information Sheet.
Initial spending will be on the items that can be used readily by the club straight away: Tools, Helmets and Training.
In regards to training any member who is interested in training as level 1 BC Coach to assist in schools and out of school sessions. These individuals may then be asked to assist in Sefton activities to promote the club and generate new members. Please contact
Jonathan Taylor: e-mail Jonathan.Taylor@sefton.gov.uk
Thanks go to Steve Evans, the cycling paramedic, who gave a very informative
talk and demo at the clubrooms on March 7th, on how to deal with accidents
and treat injuries mainly sustained by cyclists.
The presentation was interesting (witty at times) and I'm sure club members
gained a lot of useful knowledge from the talk.
Steve has left handouts at the clubrooms for those who missed the evening. _ Margaret Sims,
Colin Baldwin wiil be giving a presentation/talk/demo about the work of a masseur/soigneur on the race scene at the next Youth Night on Friday 21st January. 6.00.pm prompt at the Club room. All members are welcome.

Eastlands are celebrating after receiving a grant for £2500 from the Youth Opportunity Fund to put on a major track event.
John Daly (club vice chairman and coach said) The idea is that our club teenagers will organise and run the event with the support of adults. This will give our teenagers an opportunity to get a feel for how a major event should be run and at the same time give them confidence and team working skills they need as young adults. Our teenagers have been so impressed by the DHL Sprint School they wanted to do this type of event

Funeral details are now available. We are sorry to report that Albert Hopkins, the oldest member of the club, passed away on Friday at 13.30. Albert was born on 1st February 1920. For more about Albert click here.

Peter got out of the hospital on Monday late in the afternoon. The break was a bad one and needed to be pinned. Peter suffered from a reaction to the anaesthetic which delayed his release. He will not be able to go to the dinner on Friday. He says thanks to all for their good wishes. He will now have time to master his new GPS device!
Following the accident Peter suffered during the Eureka Audax (see separate report on the Audax page) Peter has had to have his collar bone pinned. He went into hospital on Friday (19 Nov) and had hoped to be out the same day. It now appears that he will not be out of hospital till Sunday at the earliest. Further updates to follow.
Spencer is back on his bike. His hand is still sore and has a support and bandages which are to be removed next week. He was lucky to miss further injury when the Saturday ride from the Plough was passing through Banks. There was a large group and Spencer, who was riding at the back of the group, was caught out with several others when the group suddenly slowed with no warning shouts.
We are advised by the Development Officer - Cycling, from Sefton Council, that there are opportunities for 14 to 19 year olds to train as coaches. If you follow click on the link this may be of interest http://www.active-sefton.co.uk/active-sports/coach-education.html
Jonathan Taylor (Development Officer) will be looking for BC coaches to assist in the running of coaching camps and coaching initiatives across the borough. Those that come forwards will be utilised in the area nearest to them to reduce unnecessary travelling. Contact Jonathan (Jonathan.Taylor@Sefton.gov.uk)
